Secrets of Becoming a Successful Diversity Expert
The keys to becoming a diversity expert is to have an arsenal of tools available for managing the landmines of the profession, and the ability to access them at will. This will enable you to recognize what an organization or individual needs, and command attention in the delivery of services. Unfortunately, the competencies are not taught in most programs due to limited time and limited understanding of competency development.

Many diversity professionals burn out because they get tired of fighting uphill battles and the resistance to their work. Those who get the most out the profession have learned that reframing the work and developing skills that get the attention of those in authority can make a huge difference. You can get in on what they have discovered with DTUI courses.

Ideally, you would develop your expertise as a diversity professional by attending a fulltime program. Given the scarcity of degree programs, you will likely find yourself traveling here and there to a course at a local university or attending a weekend seminar at an institute. If possible, you can move to another city to commit to a fulltime post-graduate degree program. If you work for an organization in which developing diversity expertise will increase your opportunities for a promotion, then leaving your organization is an unlikely option. Those of you who are already serving as an in-house diversity expert are likely in need of resources and additional skills that will help you do your job more effectively. Even managers, healthcare professional, educator, police officers, human resource professionals, and others prefer and need accessible continuous learning resources.

The working professional’s fast-moving, ever-changing organization makes it difficult to get away from the desk sufficiently long enough to receive proper training. Even going to that intensive training session in another city will take you away from your family and social life, which is already strained by competition with work life. DTUI’s online format is ideal for the growing group of people who seek distance learning programs to develop their competency in a 365-day a year, 24-hour a day, 7-day week format.

Are Online Courses Effective?
Online universities are springing up everywhere to offer the alternative educational resources needed for on-the-job continuous learning. Is on-line training effective? The answer is unequivocally yes based on the evidence. People, in fact, learn more. The reason is that the distance learning format places more responsibility for learning on individual students compared to the typical classroom course. Highly motivated people who work well independently thrive with online classes.

Recent innovations offer technology that heightens the interactive experience of those in online classes. The Chat-Line is one feature, but you have to be able to type really fast to get the most out of it. Professors often give group assignments that require email, and sometimes telephone, contact among student teams to complete the work. These help students feel connected to other students even beyond that experienced in many classrooms. However, the professor remains at a distance. Ideally, you want a professor who you can hear lecture, ask questions, and hear other students’ comments about the lecture and respond to their thoughts. DTUI offers professors with credentials from respectable universities, such as University of California, University of Oklahoma, University of Oregon, and University, who are proficient in online course delivery. Our e-learning support specialist assists faculty in maximizing the use of the online technology for learning purposes.

The Need for Courses With Information You Can Use Immediately
Many university courses are designed to offer theoretical work with little attention to applying what is taught. Seldom is a course designed with your everyday workplace needs taken into consideration. Learning to be a diversity professional requires hands-on experience. DTUI is proud to boast that most of its students state that they learn things that they can immediately use in their organization and personal life. In fact, within the first few weeks of instruction our students start to feel and be looked upon as experts due to the competencies they acquire.

Is it possible to learn diversity expertise on-line? This is great question. Diversity expertise requires learning ways of thinking and developing facilitation skills that only face-to-face, hands-on methods have been known to develop. However, in both face-to-face and distance learning formats, the key is a good command of how to teach. Clearly the use of technology is unique in the teaching methods required. Our e-learning staff, under the expert guidance of DTUI President Billy Vaughn, PhD, utilizes state-of-the-art teaching strategies to offer students a rewarding learning experience that offers real-world competencies. We have been trained by reputable organizations, such as the College Board, the Western Association of Schools & Colleges, and Syllabus, in effective online class delivery. We continue to learn more by the day. In addition, we are contributing to the online course delivery field by developing innovative strategies for competency training in the work that we do.

Training Programs Overview
DTUI now offers two training programs at this time: Diversity Trainer Certificate Program (DTC) & Master's Degree in Culture and Organizational Behavior (COB)

Most Common Class Schedule Format*
Contact the DTUI administrative office for information on schedules for your location and your program. Below are some of the most common course schedules. However, to meet the needs of students, other schedule formats may be offered.

DTUI’s distance learning format offers courses and certificate programs in which instruction and discussion takes place entirely online. Most of these courses are offered in the five-week format, and the instructor sets the pace and format of the class. Students can access classes at any time of the day from anywhere they have Internet access.

While many students may wish to take courses in the individual format, others may wish to maximize opportunities to share their learning experience with other students. A cohort program is one in which all students begin at one time and attend all classes as a group. The full course schedule is planned in advance, so by choosing the cohort model, a student can expect to complete their program in a specified period of time. It takes about 9-11 months to complete a certificate program and 18-21 months to complete a master’s degree program, depending on the time of year the student starts and the pace of taking courses.

*The format is continuously being updated to include the latest technology. Students will be apprised of any changes by the professor. At this writing, we are researching the use of webinar technology, which will enable both real time access to a lecture and non real time access to the recording of all lectures.

The Diversity Trainer Certificate (DTC) Program
The DTC program is designed for the individual who seeks to learn the basics of diversity training in order to become a trainer or consultant. This program offers nine (9) courses needed to understand and apply the basics of diversity training. At the end of the courses, the individual receives a certificate of completion.

The following courses apply:

  • Culture & Organizational Behavior (DTUI 100; 5 weeks). This course provides information about the challenges of diversity. It is based on the assumption that we are programmed by culture to solve problems in unique ways. The course stresses the importance of learning cultural differences in problem solving and the implications for interacting effectively with people from different cultures. (This course was six-weeks until calendar year 2002-2003).
  • Training System Design & Development (DTUI 200; 5 weeks). This course focuses on the foundation for designing and developing group training and facilitation modules.

  • Organizational Culture (DTUI 600; 5 weeks). This course offers insight into how corporations and formal organizations arrange for differences. Particular focus is on the practices that work and those that fail. Students will learn how to use the organization's mission statement as a way to promote inclusion. This course was previously called Corporate Culture.
  • Cultural Audits (DTUI 700; 5 weeks). This course covers three types of assessment methods: questionnaire, checklists, and opinionaires. Guidelines for conducting focus groups and interviews are offered. Tools for pinpointing diversity-related problems and training of managerial and direct support staff are covered.
  • Training Systems Development II (DTUI 800; 5 weeks). This course provides the advance design principles for developing group training and facilitation modules.
  • Marketing Your Expertise (DTUI 900; 6 weeks). This course offers the art of marketing one's diversity skills. Whether you are an in-house diversity specialist or a diversity trainer looking to build a practice, this course will give you insight into the barriers of being paid what you are worth, the challenges of being a diversity expert, and how to overcome them.

Master's in Culture and Organizational Behavior
The Master's in Culture and Organizational Behavior (COB) program is for those individuals who are serious about becoming a diversity trainer. This person wants a credential that specifies expertise in diversity training and consulting.

In addition to the nine courses taken in the DTC program, the COB program requires six more. Each student is also required to develop a unique instructional technology, such as a workshop under supervision of two DTUI faculty members. Once the courses are completed and the technology is complete, the person must satisfactorily complete three diversity trainings (under DTUI faculty supervision). At this point, all requirements are satisfied and the individual receives a diploma indicating that s/he is a certified DTUI trained diversity expert.

In addition to the nine courses taken in the DTC program, the DCDT program requires five more. The additional courses include:

  • Training Systems Development II (5 weeks)
  • Diversity Consulting (5 weeks)
  • Diversity Coaching (5 weeks)
  • Developing & Marketing a Practice (5 weeks)
  • Diversity Project (9 weeks)

In addition, the individual is required to develop a unique training module, assessment tool, or some other intervention, under the supervision of two DTUI faculty members. Once the courses are completed and the technology is complete, the person must satisfactorily complete three diversity trainings (under DTUI faculty supervision). At this point, all requirements are satisfied and the individual receives a diploma indicating that s/he is a certified DTUI trained diversity expert.

The COB offers you (1) the most advanced knowledge and skills, (2) personal diversity coaching, and (3) extensive marketing support. Participants receive a certification diploma upon program completion.

The master’s degree program gets students involved in training and consulting as quickly as possible. This way the program trainees learn new knowledge and skills while practicing them under expert guidance.

All trainees receive the DTUI Intercultural Competency Development e-Newsletter and two ½ hour telephone sessions with a faculty person to discuss either specific or general diversity questions or challenges.
