Introduction
The courses at Diversity U are designed with the working professional in mind. However, even university students will find the tools and curriculum here valuable. DTUI.com is a free-standing corporate university dedicated to training and certifying diversity professionals. Many of the participants entering our program have recently taken on a major diversity leadership role in their organization. They seek the DTUI.com certification to secure the expertise and credibility needed to succeed. Other participants seek to augment their diversity expertise. Another group of participants desire to become a diversity consultant and trainer. Our program meets each of these needs.

Diversity expertise involves developing the competencies needed to manage, work with, and market to people across cultures. Certification provides the competence needed to communicate, develop cross-cultural relationships, conduct business across cultures, and avoid costly social foibles. The result is more productive encounters and increased potential for innovation in a diverse organization.

Cultural competence is critical for meeting the demands of today’s world. Organizations of all sizes can ill afford to ignore the opportunities (and also the liabilities) brought about by diversity and globalism. Consider the impact of the internet in bringing people together who would not otherwise have an opportunity to communicate with one another. While we have developed the technical capabilities to connect electronically at a distance, we continue to struggle with understanding the needs, expectations, and potential of people form cultures that are very different than our own.

Each of us can see the problems caused by poor cultural competence in the daily news and in our lives.

  • Organizations in the United States pay millions of dollars each year to settle discrimination lawsuits.
  • Employees lose their jobs for saying or doing something that is considered culturally insensitive.
  • Companies are scrambling to change market strategy to attract customers across different cultural groups in response to demographic changes.

Continuous learning is a must in modern worklife. Learning how to manage diversity among those you work with requires learning to deal with the complexities fo diversity that few have mastered. Where do people learn cultural competence? Most of us learn some of it early in our lives from parents, friends, teachers, and our clergy, but few of these important people adequately model effective cross-cultural skills. Higher education institutions rarely prepare people for a diverse workplace. At the same time, working in a modern organization requires you to learn what you need as quickly as possible and use it as readily as necessary--including managing diversity.

Many organizations offer new and existing employees a diversity course to make up for the lack of pre-recruitment preparation. However, these programs rarely equip employees adequately to deal with the increasing cultural complexities that they encounter from within and outside of the organization. Studies show that even the best diversity practice organizations are not fully protected from verbal racial slights and other insensitive communications that lower productivity. The required depth of expertise simply exceeds the internal capabilities of even these bet practice companies. Diversity managers require even greater competence to serve as a leader.

Diversity management, consulting and training has become an industry with enormous growth potential. Currently, the need for people with diversity experts is greater than the availability--or the needed expertise.

If you learn legal stuff, you become bounded by EEO laws. There are other departments for that. If you simply learn how to conduct a diversity training, you are not likely to know how to develop a strategic plan or work competently with the leadership. We teach you to be The Expert with the competence to create an inclusive and productive organization.

The flexibility of the instructional format enables you to take courses and programs in the best way that suits you. Face-to-face DTC Level 1 instruction can take place in a 4-day intensive. Level 2 is an intensive 3 1/2 day program.

The self-pace course requires completing readings and exercises in binders shipped to you along with voice-over power point presentations on CD. You receive a certificate of completion after the self-pace course and may choose to take Level 2 in face-to-face format to complete the certification.

Course Format
DTUI's courses are in face-to-face or self-pace formats. The face-to-face may require travel, while the self-pace program can be completed in one's own space and time frame.

What is a Free-Standing Corporate University?
Have you heard of Toyota University? Well, Toyota has its own university for employee continuous education. Many of the Fortune 500 companies have their own university to offer the courses most suitable for enterprise purposes and to save on tuition costs. DTU.com serves as a corporate-type university with diversity expertise education as its focus. However, we are not affiliated with a particular company. That makes us free-standing or independent.
