Message
from Deborah Carvalho
When I started working
with minority communities recruiting blood donors,
I thought it would be as easy as explaining the
need and the response would be immediate. I soon
realized, however, that this was not going to
be as easy as I thought. Given the fact that I
would be working with people from various ethnic,
religious, cultural etc. backgrounds, my goals
took on new dimensions.
I
realized that I would first have to understand the
communities, their values, their fears and their
motivations. Only then would I be able to create
the education and awareness so that I could ask
the right questions.
I
also realized that I would not only have to be inter-culturally
competent, but I also would have to encourage that
way of thinking among my colleagues.
Training
with DTUI helped me to understand how little I knew
and how much there was to learn; from understanding
the culture of an organization and how to assess
the level of commitment to diversity and inclusion
as well as learning how to implement diversity initiatives
in order to create and develop the necessary tools
to help move the organization toward diversity and
inclusion.
I
developed the knowledge and the skills that I will
need to work in a demographically diverse and complex
organization and for that, I am grateful. When I
started the first class, I wasn't sure if I wanted
to continue, given how little I knew. I was concerned
that I was not the right person to take this course
since I did not have an HR background. As I continued,
though, I realized how vitally important this course
would be in order to understand our global economy.
In
conclusion, I want to thank Billy for his patience
with my numerous phone calls and emails. He always
had the time for me, and the one on one interaction
was extremely helpful in opening my mind and thinking
outside the box.
