RECENT
DTUI NEWS RELEASES
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
DTUI Diversity Expert Supports Senator Trent Lott.
Business Wire, Dec 16, 2002
News/Assignment
Editors
FEATURE...
--(BUSINESS
WIRE)--Dec. 16, 2002
Billy
E. Vaughn, Ph.D., of Diversity Training University
International (DTUI) believes that Senator Lott should
not resign from his Senate leadership position.
Dr.
Vaughn is editor of the Intercultural Competency Development
e-Newsletter. He stated his view in response to a
subscriber's letter to the editor about the Dec. 11,
2002 publication. The reader commented about an article
in the Diversity News section, which describes the
utility of social science techniques in determining
whether or not Lott's comments express prejudice.
The reader took issue with the conclusion from the
analysis that Senator Lott's words reflect racial
bias and prejudice.
According
to Dr. Vaughn, "We need to rely on social science
techniques because people have learned how to express
their prejudice in ways that avoid the stigma of being
labeled a racist. Common sense, however, helps us
realize that Senator Lott's comments showed a lack
of intercultural competence."
Interestingly,
Dr. Vaughn does not support the view that the Senator
should resign.
Dr.
Vaughn's position is based on years of experience
as a diversity expert and executive coaching with
people suffering from prejudice. He concludes that
Senator Lott's predicament reflects the country's
unresolved issues concerning race. Dr. Vaughn believes
that Senator Lott is motivated by the crisis to overcome
his public humility and chastisement. He will work
hard to change his image, which will result in reaching
out to understand African-Americans better. While
Senator Lott may not overcome his deep-seated bias,
he will likely make more compassionate decisions.
Forgiving
Senator Lott for his past transgressions and holding
him accountable for improving his ability to serve
different racial groups will help our nation move
forward. Forcing him to step down will reproduce
a
society of political correctness and resistance to
supporting each other in developing the intercultural
competence we all need. A sincere effort on Senator
Lott's part will be a model for the rest of us.
