Organizational Inclusion Assessment ToolKit
The Resources You Need For Success

Organizational Assessment - Samples

Introduction

While diversity training is implemented in most organizations without a prior needs assessment, leaders of the top organizations understand the importance od assessing the existing diversity climate to design, develop and implement high impact interventions. Information collected from the assessment also offer baseline data useful for measuring the effectiveness of an intervention. Finding a cultural assessment tool that suits your organization's needs is not easy. The Diversity training University International (DTUI) organization Inclusion Assessment (OIA) tool offers a unique kit that can be used to assess any organization's climate.

OIA Kit
What is unique about OIA?

The few existing diversity assessment tools do little more than highlight the existing institutional climate problems. Data collection methods typically consist of few key informants are interviews and focus group sessions with members of different departments or identity groups. The OIA Tookitl is based on our proprietary cultural competence development stage model. The stages, based on an article by Billy Vaughn, PhDand Mercedes Martin in Strategic Diversity & Inclusion Management magazine (May 2007):OIA Kit

  1. Conventional
  2. Defensive
  3. Ambivalent
  4. Integrative
  5. Inclusive

Understanding your organization's current inclusion stage is useful for establishing baseline data and determining what is needed to make progress towards higher stages. Strategic diversity initiatives based on developmental stage data have superior results.

  • Your organization's specific diversity-related needs are based on the current identified stage of inclusion.
  • Each inclusion stage identified by OIA corresponds to a set of recommendations for improving the organizational culture.
  • The results is a set if data that can be used to target interventions,, as well as serve as baseline data to measure progress over time.
  • Your organizations can start its diversity initiative with confidence and the insights into what high impact intervention needs when using the OIA strategic planning.
  • Included in the kit is information on how to integrate the OIA data with other strategic initiatives, such as Talent Management and Diversity Education program development.
What is the assessment format?

OIA employs survey, key informant, archive, and focus group data collection methods. This four-component approach to organizational assessment involves collecting and using data from each source (e.g., department) and integrating it to develop appropriate interventions. the resulting data hold the promise of offering insights into the specific intervention needs that complement those corresponding to your organization's developmental stage.

The survey contains 35 items, such as the following, shown with the response scale used:

Cultural differences are valued.

I Strongly Disagree                             I Strongly Agree

A statement about valuing diversity is included in the mission statement.

I Strongly Disagree                             I Strongly Agree

The culture, or unwritten social rules, allows everyone to feel included.

I Strongly Disagree                             I Strongly Agree

OIA survey items, as set, correspond to the developmental stages of inclusion that are being measured. The resulting average survey score for a group of respondents or organization corresponds to one of the five stages. DTUI developed the scale and knows of no other similar scale that measures stage of inclusion. A set of surveys is provided in the tool kit, along with interview questions, and a user manual.

Data from individual interviews with management and the leadership (referred to as Key Informant Interviews), as well as from Focus Group interviews with identify groups also provide information about the interventions needed to achieve higher stages. These interviews provide important information about their vision for and commitment to diversity and inclusion. Other interviews may include those with human resource director, diversity office manager, and an in-house diversity team leader. A set of structured Key Informant interview items are provided in the tool kit.

Focus group interviews are conducted with units or departments within an organization and with different identity groups. Members who share everyday work life within a unit have a similar experience in terms of diversity and inclusion, which the interview can capture. Inclusion stage similarities and differences among units can also be assessed with this method. Identity groups within the organization also have opportunities to offer their unique perspectives. A set of structured Focus Group interview items are provided in the tool kit.

How easy is it to use the tool?

All survey items correspond to a two-anchor format (i.e. Strongly Agree to Strongly Disagree), which is easy to learn and use. Each response corresponds to a numerical value for scoring, so that the final score ranges from one to five. The Key Informant Interview and Focus Group information is in the form of comments they made during the sessions. The organization can use the scoring system included in the tool kit to identify the current inclusion stage and intervention recommendations. DTUI's consulting services staff offers telephone and email support with data analysis to a limited extent. organizations can also choose to submit the data they collect to DTUI to conduct the analyses Aden provide a written summary report for a reasonable fee.
