If the existence
of several organizations offering diversity trainer workshops
and seminars is an indicator, the demand is high.
One of the
oldest and most well-known institution offering diversity trainer
skills is the National Multicultural Training Institute based
in Washington, D.C. The institute offers week-long programs which
include many seminars, lectures, and workshops. The National Training
Laboratory offers workshops on organizational management, including
diversity training. The National Conference of Race and Ethnicity
in Higher Education has offered diversity-related training for
more than a decade. Most of the conferences' workshops and sessions
focus on diversity training. The same is true for the National
Association of Multicultural Education which will offer its 10th
annual conference in 1998.
Many companies
offer in-house training for employees. Recently, the FAA offered
training to all of its employees which represent airport workers
across the United States. Diversity training books, manuals, tapes,
and videos are numerous and their numbers increase considerably
by the day.
President
Clinton's Race Initiative also helped to promote diversity training.
More communities, organizations, and companies are beginning to
appreciate the importance of promoting better relations among
American groups. They need experts to assist them.
The number
of independent diversity consultants is large and increasing by
the day. Dozens are located in each large metropolitan area.
